Planning to give your stairs a fresh paint job? That's a great idea! Winter is an excellent time to tackle this project, and with a little patience, anyone can do it.
Below are some frequently asked questions that can help you with this job. Good luck!
- What paint is suitable for my stairs?
- Can I paint my stairs just like that?
- Does my staircase need primer?
- How much paint do I need for my stairs?
- Is it difficult to paint stairs?
- Should I seal or paint first?
- What is the sequence when painting stairs?
What paint is suitable for my stairs?
Water-based floor paint is ideal for stairs. This paint is low in solvents, does not smell strong and is less harmful to the environment. In addition, the paint dries hard, so it is fully cured after five days. This is perfect for stairs that are used often.
Can I just paint my stairs?
It is a job that requires some time and skill, but any wooden staircase can be painted. If the old coat of paint is still in good condition, it is enough to clean the stairs well and sand lightly before applying the new paint.
Does my staircase need primer?
Whether you need primer depends on the condition of the current paint job. With many bald spots, it is recommended to apply a primer first. If the paintwork is still good and you just want a new color or shine, degreasing and light sanding is sufficient.
How much paint do I need for my stairs?
The amount of paint you need varies depending on the stairs. For a closed staircase with 13 steps and one handrail, one gallon for one coat is usually enough. If there are bare spots, apply a coat of primer first and then two coats of paint. A liter of good floor paint costs about 50 euros, so count on about 150 euros for paint.
Is it difficult to paint a staircase?
It's not difficult, but it takes time if you want to do it right. Think about sanding, scraping and caulking. I wrote a blog about this that explains step by step how to give your stairs a new coat of paint.
Should I sealant or paint first?
There is much debate about the order of sealant and paint. With baseboards and window frames, it is better to seal after primer because of the action of the wood. With stairs, however, it is better to seal first to prevent paint from creeping into the seams, which can cause creaking noises.
What is the sequence when painting a staircase?
Start with the sides (stair stringers on the wall side) and the banister, followed by the risers and finally the steps. Tape the connections between the step and the riser to prevent paint from getting on the steps. You can paint the steps alternately so you can still walk up.
