Tips that keep your stairs safe
If you give the house a makeover, you can now also refurbish your stairs with different materials.
Such as a transfer renovation step, plastic stair moonshaped pads, painting your stairs completely white and applying a white non-slip stair strip, applying an old-fashioned 1930s stair runner and much more.
You can also open your stairs completely for a nice spacial effect. The balustrade is removed, the risers are removed from the stairs, possibly a wall that stands in the way and the steps are covered with a vinyl layer, for example.
A great idea of course, but keep in mind that your stairs remain safe. Vinyl steps are beautiful, instead of those filthy carpets, it is more practical to clean and the cat hairs no longer cause allergies so all in all a perfect solution.
What can you do now to give yourself that look, but that the stairs remain safe.
Giving an open staircase more safety
Small children tend to crawl between the steps. The height between the steps at the Dutch stairs is at least 14 to 17 cm, a small child up to 6 years old can easily crawl through here.
You can solve a dangerous situation by mounting a wooden rule of approximately 5 cm under each step. You can cover this in the color of the stairs, or paint it in the color of the stairs.
There are also metal brackets for sale that you can screw to the back of each step at the bottom. The staircase then remains open and you still keep that spatial effect, the staircase is immediately 100% safe for small children.
You can see a good example below of how they do this in Germany with open stairs made by deTreppenmeister.
New painted steps can be beautiful
Nowadays you can also buy plastic moons that can be cut and glued. These are also practical and easy to clean and do not cause allergies.
It is also conceivable that you provide the stairs with an anti-slip strip for stairs. There are 2 models available in a number of colors. There is a cut-in strip for sale that is pressed into a groove in the stair step.
If you have the stair made by the stair maker, he/she can make this groove directly for you. If you want to apply it to the existing stairs, it is easier and cheaper to add a self-adhesive strip special for stairs.
These are also available in various colors and different thicknesses and prices and are also easy to apply by everyone.
Leave clutter on your stairs
The number 1 cause of accidents on the stairs is that it is often used as a place to put all kinds of things, you don't want to keep walking upstairs to take things to the bedrooms, that's why you collect it on the stairs, if you forget it, a pair of shoes, a pile of laundry, or toys from the children can cause quite a fall.
There is even a funny book written about it called "The mess at the bottom of the stairs" Very recognizable, probably driven by a hasty life.
You can easily solve this by placing a laundry basket or a wicker basket under and above the stairs. Deposit all items that have to go up or down here and keep your stairs free of danger!
Wall railing for extra support
If you don't have a wall railing, then this is really the minimum you need to install to make your stairs safe.
Nowadays, many models of handrails are available, such as a modern stainless steel handrail or a plastic bendable handrail to allow the handrail to run anywhere along the wall.
Especially if you are a bit older and occasionally suffer from dizziness, then a round banister is the most ideal, it gives you a good grip so that you can grab your hand well around the banister.
The installation of the stair railing must also be done properly. Many accidents occur due to the lack of a handrail or a loose handrail.
If your wall is in poor condition and the supports become loose quickly, then mounting a wooden blemish plank is absolutely necessary. You first glue and screw this to the wall and then you can mount the supports for your banister on this blemish board.
Place a mobile fence
If you have small children, these are huge hand binders. You can't walk anywhere and have to keep them in the gate all the time and. If they can climb out of their bed, they will go down the stairs before you know it, enterprising as those little ones are.
You can of course also make a fixed stair gate for the bottom and top at the beginning and end of the stairs. These are for sale in many variations of prices and qualities.
You can also opt for a movable fence, which is useful if you are working in another room or in the garden when the weather is nice. You can place the gate in front of a door opening, of course also in front of the stairs or how about in the garden?
You can even make a kind of box out of it. Here too, there are many different qualities and prices available. Orient yourself well in this. A big advantage of these balustrade fences is that they are mobile and can be moved.
Create non-slippery painted steps
If you have painted the steps, your steps will be quite slippery with walking on.
You can also treat the steps with an anti-slip layer that you apply to the step, unfortunately this layer wears off the step quite quickly and they give matte spots on the step that look messy.
There is also an anti-slip stair paint for sale at the better paint specialist. A kind of plastic grain is stirred into the paint, so that when you apply this paint, a sandpaper-like layer is created, which works well, but does not really feel pleasant to the bare feet.
The sanding layer wears out very quickly with shoes and is therefore certainly not suitable for all living situations. Applying a good anti-slip stair strip to your stair tread is still the best solution for a safe and non-slip stair tread.
The anti-slip strip has an inhibiting effect due to the raised side of approximately 2 mm. This gives a good grip, especially when walking downhill.
