The world of staircase design is in a state of flux. Where traditional spruce and hardwood stairs used to be the standard, we are now increasingly seeing stairs with an industrial look. New materials are being introduced and stairs are getting larger, contributing to a more comfortable walking experience and less chance of tripping. The downside is that a larger staircase takes up more living space.

Although the traditional Dutch staircase model is still popular, it is now often manufactured from other types of wood. Consider, for example, the ecological staircase made of bamboo. This is a beautiful and super strong material, ideal for stairs. Bamboo can be stained or oiled in many colors. In addition to bamboo, we are increasingly seeing stairs made from the rubber tree, an ecological alternative that is displacing tropical hardwood.

A combination of bamboo and steel is also increasingly common, creating a modern and industrial look. This style goes perfectly with shades of gray and, for example, a concrete cast floor or a sanded concrete floor, a current trend.

In existing homes, it can be challenging to achieve this modern look without large investments. Still, there are ways to create a similar look on a limited budget. Consider opening up the stairs by removing the risers for a spacious effect. You can also opt for stair renovation with overlay steps. The 2017 collection offers many options, such as a concrete look or bamboo look. The dark wenge wood color has also been updated and offers a better look. Paint the sides of the stairs dark for stunning results.

An industrial atmosphere can also be achieved by painting the stairs with concrete look paint or effect paint. There are several brands and paint systems available today that give excellent results with multiple coats of paint. I previously wrote a blog article about this.

Safety is also important. With new stairs, you can have an anti-slip groove milled into the treads. Choose from various colors of rubber pvc strips or a stainless steel strip for a good anti-slip effect. For a refurbished existing staircase, anti-slip adhesive strips are a practical solution. These are available in different colors.
