If you want to refurbish your stairs, there are numerous options for lighting your stairs these days. Many homes have a toilet downstairs, so it can be quite dangerous to go downstairs at night. You'd rather not turn on a bright light, so it's helpful to install LED stair lighting. It is definitely worth investigating what is possible in this area. There are several ways to add lighting to your stairs.
Stair lighting under each step
If you are considering a complete stair renovation, you can opt for stair lighting in your stair treads. Each step is then illuminated with an LED strip placed under the step. This is a nice solution, but not cheap. There are many stair renovation providers who can install a complete staircase in one day. This involves placing a new overlay step over each existing step, in the color you like. An LED strip for stair lighting is then installed under this overlay.
Stair lighting with an aluminum U-profile
Want to give your stairs a fresh look without installing new replacement steps? Then consider using an aluminum strip on top of the stair tread. This is a U-shaped aluminum profile that you can easily glue into a groove at the top of the step. You then walk over the strip as it were. In this groove you can mount an LED strip for stair lighting.
A white (opal) or transparent PVC cap provides a sleek finish for the strip. The LED strip placed in the profile gives a nice even light. For example, at Stair Care you can purchase these aluminum U-profiles both complete and in separate parts. This system does require milling a groove in each step with a router so that the profile is flush with the top of the step.
Lighting the stairs with luminous strips on the step
Unfortunately, when using an LED lighting strip, you need a power supply. This often means pulling a power cable from a wall outlet and milling a slot in the wall to neatly hide the cables. An alternative are luminous strips, also called "glow in the dark" strips. These aluminum strips are specially designed for stairs and light up in the dark, providing plenty of light for up to 8 hours. They are ideal for the first and last steps. The big advantage is that you don't need a power point; they charge during the day through artificial or daylight.
Stair lighting with LED cubes for the stairway wall or wall
There are also LED cubes available that you can easily mount on the wall. These small boxes light up the side of the stairs with an LED light so you can see the steps better at night. The LED light is activated by a small sensor and automatically turns off after a minute. The cubes are battery operated and last a very long time. The big advantage is that you don't have to pull cables or cut slots in the stairs or wall, making it an easy way to illuminate your staircase....
Stair Lighting Behind the Handrail
A wonderful way to illuminate your stairs is to place lights behind a smet board or banister. You can also choose to mount an LED strip on the back of the banister or smetplank, beautifully illuminating the entire banister, as shown in the photo above.
There are many options available in different price ranges. Keep in mind that LED lighting can be sensitive to surge currents, sometimes not achieving the promised burning hours. It's important to familiarize yourself with this, as there are major quality differences in LED lighting that are often reflected in the price. Cheap can be expensive. Make sure your stair lighting is easy to replace, should an LED strip break.
Do you have your stairs all finished and tightly painted and want to give the steps a safety strip? Then there are two options: you can choose an infill strip or an anti-slip adhesive strip for stairs.
If you are going to repaint the stairs and choose the milled strip, mill the groove first. Let the paint dry thoroughly (at least 5 days with alkyd paint) and degrease the step well with alcohol before applying the strip. If you go for anti-slip tape, read here about the different types of anti-slip tapes and their comparisons. Or, with no obligation, request a color card of our anti-slip stair strip.
